At STEM Girls, we like to serve tasty treats alongside a heaping plate of knowledge. It's always fun to share a snack with friends, but it's even more fun to make them at home with your family! Here's my all-time favorite cookie recipe (except for the fabulous chocolate chip cookies you can find in the recipe section of our blog).

This is the type of cookie I get cravings for: sweet, spicy, earthy molasses cookies. They're soft and chewy, and when they came out of the oven, they were soft enough to press images into with the fat end of a chopstick. The girls were pleased that I wrote "STEM GIRLS" out and then decorated the leftovers with leaves, referring to our love of "stem."
Down-Home Molasses Cookies - from my regular routine mixed with my favorite recipe by Brenda Hall Ingredients:

I thought I'd mix it up a little this time, with white chocolate instead of the usual semi-sweet and an addition of juicy, organic dried cranberries. The girls like white chocolate, so they enjoyed this.
Sweet White-Cran Cookies: - a variation on Trisha Yearwood's recipe on Food Network Ingredients:

Because our third meeting of STEM Girls would be spent mostly sedentary, I decided that I simply had to make my favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe. It's a Food Network recipe, but I can't speak more highly of them. They're the perfect balance of sweet and salty, and give a perfectly homey atmosphere to any situation.

The weekend before the second STEM Girls meeting, we received a pasalubong (souvenir) of fresh, South Carolina pecans when a family friend came to visit. They were absolutely delicious, and I knew that I would have to use them in my batch of cookies for the girls. After all, when life gives you pecans... make pecan shortbread.
Pecan Shortbread (2 dozen) - Adapted from the Barefoot Contessa Cookbook Ingredients:

As someone who loves to make and eat sweets, I know the power of a well-placed cookie bribe for someone's trust. As I haphazardly stress-baked before our first STEM Girls meeting, I used that excuse to justify the dozens of cookies that poured from our oven like water beneath Noah's Ark. I made two types of cookies, relatively plain, with the two things I found lying around the house: Nutella and Maizena. For those who don't know, Nutella is a chocolate-hazelnut spread and Maizena is a popular brand of cornstarch. Nutella is a surprisingly useful baking ingredient (seriously, try it), and Maizena makes for a light, simple twist on the sugar cookie. The cookies were easy and fun to make, and they were a hit with the girls (thank god). Here are the STEM Girls Approved recipes:
